5 Signs Your Roof Has Hail Damage — And Why You Can't See Most of Them From the Ground

Every spring and summer, hailstorms roll across the Lake Houston area — Atascocita, Humble, Kingwood, and the surrounding neighborhoods all take hits. And every year, homeowners walk outside after the storm, glance up at the roof, see nothing obviously wrong, and move on.

That glance is how people end up paying for a new roof out of pocket. Hail damage on asphalt shingles is mostly invisible from the ground — but it's exactly what insurance adjusters are trained to find, and most policies give you a limited window to file a claim after the storm date. Here's what hail actually does up there.

01Bruising you can feel but not see

A hailstone doesn't usually punch a hole in a shingle. It bruises it — crushing the fiberglass mat underneath while the surface looks nearly normal. Like a bruise on an apple, the damage shows up over time: the crushed spot sheds granules, dries out, and becomes the first place your roof leaks two years later. From the ground, a bruised roof looks fine. From 100 feet directly above, at 4K resolution, the circular impact patterns are unmistakable.

02Granule loss concentrated in impact zones

Those sand-like granules on shingles aren't decoration — they're the UV shield for the asphalt underneath. Hail knocks granules loose in distinctive circular patches, exposing dark asphalt beneath. One patch is wear; dozens scattered across a slope in the storm's direction is a hail signature. Check your gutters and downspout splash blocks: piles of granules after a storm are the ground-level clue most homeowners miss.

03Exposed or fractured fiberglass mat

Larger hail — the golf-ball-plus sizes that make the local news — can fracture the mat itself, showing up as shiny spots or star-shaped cracks. This is the damage class adjusters weigh most heavily, and it's essentially impossible to spot without being on (or above) the roof.

04Damaged soft metals — the adjuster's tell

Before an adjuster ever looks at your shingles, they look at the soft metals: vents, flashing, gutters, and the AC condenser fins. Metal dents don't heal and can't be mistaken for wear, so they prove hail size and direction. If your vents are dinged, your shingles took the same hits. 05Damage clustered on one or two slopes

Hail rarely hits a roof evenly — it arrives at an angle, driven by wind, so damage concentrates on the slopes that faced the storm. That directional pattern is how professionals distinguish hail from age. A complete flight grid over every slope makes that pattern obvious in a way that a ladder inspection of one corner never can.

Why timing matters: most Texas homeowner policies require storm damage claims within one year of the storm date — and the burden of documentation is on you. A dated, GPS-tagged inspection report taken soon after the storm is the strongest evidence you can have.
